The Beginner’s Guide

The Stanley Parable was one of the best games I have ever played. It seamlessly blends story telling with novel forms of player interaction. Choice was the single control mechanism that players were given. If you have not played it… do. Now Davey Wreden, Stanley‘s creator has brought us a new game.

The Beginner’s Guide is not made as a successor to Stanley Parable. It is a narrative, but in a much more serious vein than in Stanley. The very nature of this game dictates that there is little I can do without spoiling something. So, my review below consists of my spoiler free thought of this game.

Thank you for sharing it

I loved it

(Also, if you are having a crash on start set it to launch with -sw (this will put it into windowed mode and it will launch fine))

Julian has been involved in the games industry for more than a couple of years now, from working in retail to developing board games to judging Magic: the Gathering tournaments Australia wide. Now as a writer for OK Games he likes to explore niche titles that try to approach gaming from a different perspective. Now all he needs to do is start finishing all those games in his Steam Library...

I just heard about this the other day. So how similar is it to SP (Stanley Parable)?

Or is it something completely different? (The trailer gave more questions than answers, and I’m worried checking out the gameplay via youtube will ruin it since I’ve heard it’s kinda short like SP was and I don’t want spoilers).

    • The main element that this shares with SP is that is is focused on story rather than gameplay mechanics. If you are after a light hearted SP style game then this is not the game you are looking for. It is far darker, and far more serious. This is a game that invites serious discussion (something piece that I am working on writing now) on some far more mature themes. I am sorry that this is so vague, but it is a game where the progression through the game is just as important to the story as what is happening to the player.
      I hope this helps.
