Knock-knock – The Brief

Who’s There? / It’s Bruce. I have come about the lights.

This is a game about flashing lights, candles and a house which just won’t sit still. That is horror for you. This game is named after the sound you regularly hear coming from the front door. As an inconsiderate resident you never actually answer it. I am sure that it is just the electrician who is here to fix the fittings…

As you may have surmised from the introduction or the video, this is supposed to be a horror game. While I think that it does a good job of creating a very creepy atmosphere, especially if you have the volume up, I do think that it has missed some opportunities.

You are a caretaker charged with keeping a building overnight. The story has you waking from a restless sleep, one which you will be unable to return to unless the house has been checked over. To get to the morning is your goal, but you have to force time forward. Hiding reverses time, while exploring can make it go faster.

You have a lot of doors which lock themselves, which can only be picked in the dark, and all your lights are broken. You are constantly repairing the buggers. When you have light you stand in the room until something happens and then you go on your way. There are spirits who will come after you and your light fittings, so you will spend a lot of time hiding.

I think that this is an art game. It is cool in concept, but I just didn’t have fun. I didn’t find it scary, I just found it repetitive. While it is a pc game, the controls, options and tutorials are just abysmal. IT IS SPACE TO OPEN THE DOOR! STOP TELLING ME TO PRESS “A”!
