EA and DICE keep trying to remind us that Battlefield 1 does, in fact, have a campaign. A few days ago we received a story trailer, and now we’ve been hit with a dose of 12-minute gameplay footage. Check it out below:
The trailer switches between multiple characters as you defend the war-torn country side, and engage with tanks and mounted weaponry.
It’s clear from this footage that they’re trying something different. But the opening monologue, dramatic music and consistent character deaths indicate to me, an intensely surface level portrayal of the war.
War games don’t need to have deep, and meaningful story, they don’t even need to accurately portray the conflict itself. But as soon as they start making the game’s plot appear far more meaningful than it has any right to be, the more egregious and offensive its failure will be.
