This morning Microsoft announced their acquisition of MinecraftEdu (which has actually been around since 2011) and plan to update it to bring it into more classrooms, for a subscription fee.
Minecraft: Education Edition will be free for schools for the first year, obviously to get more schools on board and to see it’s value.
Mojang’s COO, Vu Bui said in the statement:
“One of the reasons Minecraft fits so well in the classroom is because it’s a common, creative playground…We’ve seen that Minecraft transcends the differences in teaching and learning styles and education systems around the world. It’s an open space where people can come together and build a lesson around nearly anything.”
This is wonderful! I used to use Minecraft in the classroom to teach area and other forms of measurement and it is wonderful to see Microsoft capitalizing on what is already stupidly popular among school students.
