You are a little alien. That said, to someone aren’t we all a little alien on the inside (and outside). Regardless, this time it is a little more literal. Loot Rascals has you playing as a space man. Having previously landed on a unknowingly hostile planet you are suddenly thrust into a life and death battle. As you struggle to cope with the various natives that try to accost you, you must try to get away. You must flee.
Loot Rascals is, as you may have surmised, a roguelite game. You have one life to try and save yourself from the evil clutches of the hostile world. The turn-based movement and combat system has you exploring the land about you looking for a way home and items to help you survive in the wilderness. These items come in the form of cards. You will find these littered around the environment as you search for a way home.
The system underlying these cards is not all that difficult to understand. It will, however, become key to the enjoyment of the game. If the cards cannot be made to make the game fun, if they feel shoehorned in, then the experience will suffer. This is especially true for roguelites where picking up a single good item can sometimes mean the difference between success and immediate failure. The way that Hollow Ponds, the developers, describe this element is by saying:
Cards provide special abilities, buffs or alter the three core stats: life, attack and defense. A limited inventory for cards makes Min-Maxing a character essential for success. Unwanted cards can be converted into tokens, the in-game currency, which can be spent replenishing health or using special abilities.
Hollow Ponds seem to have a quite clever, and currently quite polished, game in the works. Adding cards to anything has a habit of making a game more varied, more skillful and, in my opinion, more fun. I will certainly be keeping my eye on this game as it develops. It will be a little while before we are able to see it though. The current proposed release date is in the first quarter of next year. I am sure that this will not be the last we hear about it though.
