This weekend has way too much stuff going on. Right now in the Southern Hemisphere we have PAX Australia, and in the Northern we have Blizzcon. Both these events come with news, the scale of that news may be a little different though.
Today we get two major announcements coming out of Blizzcon, one is for Overwatch, the other is for Diablo, and it is that one which interests me today. The forgotten will lie sleeping no more!
A few days ago we reported on the leaked images of the Necromancer which came from the Blizzard website. The announcement today confirms pretty much everything we suspected about him, most important of which is the refreshed nature of his abilities from D2. Classic skills like Raise Dead, Bone Spear and Corpse Explosion are all making their return.
One of the greater concerns which surrounded the introduction of the Necromancer is the potential clash of flavour between them and the Witch Doctors. When D3 was initially released it was clear that there were certain heroes that were directly inspired from past Naphalem, the Witch Doctor was considered the successor. However, Blizzard has moved to smooth the introduction by explaining what makes it separate:
The Necromancer and Witch Doctor are quite different in both theme and play style!
Witch Doctors draw their magic from their spiritual connection to a realm they call the Unformed Land. This more light-hearted take on supernatural powers allows them to command creepy crawly denizens of the jungle and summon mindless zombified pets.
Necromancers can expect darker, more controlled gameplay centered around the raw materials of life: blood and bone. Grounded in a philosophical, pragmatic approach to life and death, they’re more like a calculated conductor of the darkest arts. Deadly serious in their practice, they are the experts of curses and reanimation—and their pets obey their every command.
The Necromancer will be joining the roster of characters sometime in 2017 in a mini-expansion. There will be new slots for various things as well as the Necromancer, but there is not expected to be any further maps or zones. We do not yet know what the pricing will be.
